Improving effectiveness is a new challenge to me – “The 4-hour body” book review

During the 1st week of April 2013, I bought an audio book written by Tim Ferriss. It is about 4.5 hour long audio book. I spent total 3 mornings on it and I had to say, my time and money is total worth it as the book dramatically changed my life. Today I want to share my story and hope it can inspire you as well.

The 4-Hour body

For those of you who have no idea who Tim Ferriss is, you can find him at his blog, He is a super hero who shared his amazing stories and inspired lots of successful internet marketers such as Darran Rowse, Jason Van Orden and Pat Flynn. He sets a great example to people who want to design their own life style and escape the traditional 9 to 5 job in order to enjoy the freedom of life like me.

This new book I just listened is called “The 4-Hour Body”, which is his second book after his “4-Hour work week” book. You might have heard his first book, as it is #1 New York Times bestseller, a #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller in year 2010, which is another great book that inspired me a lot, but I think I will write another separate blog post for it after I read it for the second time. More importantly, I already decide to take new actions by using the methods from it. Before that happens, please stay tuned.  

Alright, back to “4-Hour body”, as its subtitle tells us, it is “An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman”. The sections of “incredible sex and becoming superhuman” totally blow my mind and I can’t think if there is any other book providing that much details about those certain topics, however as I am not able to apply them into my life right away, according to my “just in time” strategy, I will save them for future.

Today I am going to focus on how it’s changing my life with a rapid fat loss.

Life is about to be more effective

Before I get into details of my new weight (fat) loss challenge, I would like to talk about one basic concept I learned from “The 4-hour body” book – 80-20 rule. As you might or might not have heard this rule, I copied the definition of it from Wikipedia as following,

The Pareto principle (also known as the 80–20 rule, the law of the vital few, and the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.”

Basically it explains the importance of being more effective in our lives.

You probably know someone around you, or even yourself, had been struggling with extra body fat. I want to tell you very honestly, I am a person who has been at least 25 pounds over weighted according to me height since age 17. In the past 16 years, I have to accept the jokes from people calling me “that fat guy”, but after I finished “The 4-Hour body”, I decided not to “let it go” any more.  

I used to blame the jumbo box of chocolate bars made by Kit Kat received in summer 1992. I gained 15lbs in that single summer and first let overweight become an issue into my life, but not anymore, because I decide to own the responsibility and take the control of my life back into my hands.

Before reading this book, I have tried many different ways. Mainly doing exercises in the gym. I also tried to watch out my diet in year 2004 and 2005. I did lose more than 15lbs in those 2 years, but once I am married and have a kid, excuses came in, so I stopped. Not only I gained the 15lbs back, I also added another 10lbs extra onto my body. I thought my life was just a tragedy – no kidding!

After I learned 80-20 rule, my mind was opened. I have tried very hard before, but never understood the science behind the whole thing, so by all means, it’s not efficient at all. This time I plan to do it differently.

My New Challenge – to lose 45lbs in 365 days

I started a new challenge on Apr 13, 2013 and this time I read lots of information from health and fitness websites and talked to one of my best friends who managed to lose 32lbs in 13 weeks. I set up my goals and made my game plan. On top of that, I am using a new calorie tracking tool from to monitor the calories I intake from food and the calories I burned from exercises every day. With my trial period from Apr 9, 2013 to today, in 10 days, I lost 7 pounds!
